Samar and Leyte Tour
5 days and 5 overnights

This tour can be made only in combination with, the ‘BICOL EXPRESS TOUR’ After finishing the first part of this tour, we go to the southern point of Bicol to the little town of Matnoc. From here you will take the ferry from the island of Luzon to the islands of Samar. When you arrive the children will dive for small money you throw in the sea. The sailing from Luzon to Samar takes about two hours. You will arrive in the small town of Allen. From here we will drive along one of the most beautiful coast roads in the world to Calbayog.

On the drive to Calbayog we see a beautiful scenery of mountains, rice fields, villages with nippa houses and on the seaside many colorful boats. In Calbayog we visit the ‘‘Samar Archeologists Museum”. Here you can find everything about the history and the archeology of the island of Samar. After having a dinner of local food we stay the night in Calbayog.

The next morning we follow the coast to the south to the island Leyte. We leave the island of Samar by driving over the more then two kilometers long San Juanico bridge. This is the longest bridge in Asia and it was build in cooperation with the Japanese. This bridge is seen
by the Filipino as a big tourist attraction. We stay the night in Tacloban in the Plaza Hotel.

In the afternoon we visit the colonial style ‘‘St Nino Shrine’’ and ‘’The Heritage Museum" The wife of late president Marcos, Imelda build this house in the city of her birth. By visiting this house you get an impression of the enormous wealth of the Marcos family. The colonial house holds art treasures from all over the world which were given to the Marcos family. You can have a look at the bedrooms of Imelda Marcos, her husband and her children. We also enjoy a visit to a hill west of the city with a very big Christ figure. You will have a beautiful view over the city.

In the morning we leave for Palo. In World War II the American general Mc Arthur fulfilled here his promise of "I shall return" On this coast was a heavy sea battle with the Japanese fleet. Under heavy resistance the American and Filipino troops landed here on the beach. Because of the many casualties and wounded and the blood that was spilt here, the beach is called "Red Beach'' More then 30.000 Americans and 60.000 Japanese soldiers lost their lives here. In memory of the landing of the troops many heads of states have placed items of remembrance to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice of so many. We also have a visit to Hill 522, a 159 meter high hill. There was a heavy battle to capture this hill. A visit to the cathedral of Palo which was used in the war as a hospital is also included.

After lunch we drive along the east coast to the west coast to the harbor place Bay Bay. We visit the local market. In the harbor area we have our dinner and we spend the night in Bay Bay.

The next day we drive along the west coast to the harbor place of Ormoc. We bring a visit to the park. Ormoc has the name of being one of the cleanest city's in the Philippines. We lunch near the harbor. In the afternoon we drive to Tacloban, here we spend the night. The next day we drive back over the San Juanico bridge to Samar. We take lunch in Catbalogan. In the afternoon we arrive in Allen from where we take the ferry back to Matnoc on the island of Luzon. Here you follow with the second part of the "Bicol Express Tour".
